I think this recent article in McKinsey Quarterly hits the nail on the head – it’s about authenticity, relevance and value.  I think the next step in this conversation is integrating online social networks with offline social networks.  The truth is, they are already integrated in the “real world,” we just need to integrate them in how we think about engaging with an audience.

Re: Unlocking the Elusive Potential of Social Networks

Aren't the online networks simply an artifact of offline relationships? Are there really unique and different online relationships that are distinct from a real offline relationship? To me online "tracks" evidenced by social network conversations are simply a result of a relationship outside of the cloud. It is a convenient data set for social network scientists to analyze, publicize and utilize as evidence of human connection.

I don't think that is necessarily the case...I see a lot of "connections" in online networks that do not reflect meaningful relationships. Of course, many do...so the trick, in my view, is to be cognizant of the "noise" when studying these networks.
