I recently stumbled across the results of some interesting research conducted earlier this year – not surprising. A deeper dive is provided here. 

This raises the kinds of questions we need to be asking about online social networks and how we understand the “connections” and “relationships” that exist there.  Everyone wants a silver bullet answer.  I hate to be the one to break it to you (and hopefully I’m only reiterating what you’ve already realized or heard from others); but there is no silver bullet.  Human relationships are complex.  How we make decisions, and who we rely on to help us make those decisions, cannot be discerned by looking at the wall posts on our Facebook pages or our 1st degree connections on LinkedIn or who we follow on Twitter.  So, how do we think about these complexities and what is the role of online social networks?  Those are big questions, but I’ll offer a few things to think about in the coming posts.  Stay tuned…
